This survey was undertaken to assess the effect that the system of changing the clocks has on rural businesses and those employed in rural areas

Sampling procedures: Districts in England ordered by rural population (DoE definition): districts selected with probability proportional to rural population; parish selected randomly within district and matched to local telephone exchange; parish population less than 5000 in 1981; businesses in Yellow Pages categories were enumerated and simple random sample drawn: five in each of three categories (land work, building etc., services). Interviewers had a quota target of 3 employers in each category.
