Interviewer InstructionsIf respondents have glasses or contact lenses but do not wear them they should be coded ‘Neither’. If respondent usually wears lenses and keeps a pair of glasses only for emergency use, code ‘Contact lenses’. Only code “Both glasses and contact lenses” if he/she wears both glasses and lenses on a regular basis or at the same time. Include glasses and contact lenses obtained privately or on the NHS. Exclude ordinary (i.e non prescription) sunglasses and protective glasses (e.g worn by welders etc.)

SamplingMulti-stage stratified random sample;The sample is drawn as a simple random sample from three strata. The first of these strata is the Belfast District Council area. The other two are formed by dividing the remainder of the province into East and West along district council boundaries. Within each of these strata a simple random sample of addresses is drawn, with size proportional to the distribution of domestic addresses on the rating list.
